Targeted Urban Renewal

Overview

Revitalizing Rhode Island’s Urban Core Communities

Many entrepreneurs and small businesses in our urban communities have traditionally been underserved by a lack of access or diminished access to:

  • Investment capital
  • Adequate commercial real estate stock
  • Workforce training and education
  • Business development resources
  • Technical assistance services
  • New market growth opportunities

The RIEDC is focused on creating a strategic investment and revitalization program to stimulate business growth in Rhode Island’s urban communities.

Targeted goals for economic development in urban communities:

  • Better access to operating capital for business growth
  • Coordinated access to and development of effective business development resources
  • Identification of the most promising industry growth sectors
  • Re-branding of our cities as the places to start, grow or relocate a business
  • Identification of urban communities most in need of revitalization
  • Establish workforce training and career education pathways

Improving Urban Growth Centers

The RIEDC, along with local officials, is engaging small business and commercial property owners in urban communities to develop a preservation-based strategy for rebuilding the places and enterprises that make sustainable, vibrant and unique commercial growth centers in traditionally underserved areas.
