Rhode Island has long been known as a major center for the Jewelry industry. Extensive production of fashion jewelry began in Rhode Island in 1794 when Nehemiah Dodge, a goldsmith and watch repairer in Providence, developed a method of plating base metal with gold. Today over 7,500 persons are directly employed in jewelry manufacturing in the state and many thousands more work in jewelry relation distrubution, trade and services.
