On Thursday afternoon, April 29, the International Yacht Restoration School will open the doors of its Bristol facility to the public for a springtime Open House. The event, which runs from 4 pm to 7 pm, is a valuable opportunity to learn about IYRS training programs as well as the skills in demand in the current marketplace.
The 5,000-square-foot IYRS facility is located at the Franklin Street Marine Corridor (253 Franklin Street, Bristol) and is home to the school's Marine Systems and the newly launched Composites Technology programs.
An informative seminar entitled "Marine Training: The Value of Education in a Technically Advancing Field" will be held during the Open House at 4:30 pm.
The seminar will be lead by IYRS instructors John Stier and Henry Elliot, who oversee, respectively, the IYRS Marine Systems and Composite Technology programs. Each instructor will take a closer look at their respective fields in an effort to give career-seekers the guidance they need to navigate these technically evolving fields.
The Open House will also be a prime opportunity to learn about the school's newly launched Composites Technology program, which begins this September. Because composite materials pioneered by boat builders are now utilized by many industries—including the marine industry, wind energy, aerospace, and transportation—graduates from this new IYRS program will have a wide choice of career paths.
IYRS maintain two locations, in Newport and Bristol. Each campus is uniquely suited to the programs offered at its locale. The Newport waterfront campus—with its historic buildings from 1831 and 1903—is home to the Boatbuilding & Restoration program and the site of notable historic restorations, including the restoration of the 1885 schooner yacht Coronet. The Bristol teaching facility is based at the Franklin Street Marine Corridor, a recently developed industrial/educational complex where students mix with marine-industry companies.
