The University of Rhode Island, in partnership with Rhode Island College, has been awarded a five-year, $12.5 million National Science Foundation grant to transform the quality of science and mathematics teaching and learning at all Rhode Island middle and high schools, Governor Donald L. Carcieri announced.

Last week, the Milken Institute’s State Technology and Science Index confirmed that Rhode Island has made progress in its effort to become a regional and national hub for science, technology and innovation. Milken’s Index uses a variety of indicators to measure how well each state is performing in today’s global knowledge-based economy.

Statewide Research Alliance Bolstered by Support from Brown, URI

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) today presented its plans for expanding the Rhode Island Research Alliance and announced that Brown University and the University of Rhode Island (URI) both will contribute $25,000 to support the next phase of Research Alliance activity.

Commission Brings National and International Expertise to Strengthen Research at URI

Justice Robert G. Flanders, Jr., Chair of the University of Rhode Island Commission for Innovation and Research, announced the full roster of national and international leaders who will serve with him on the commission. The commission is charged with proposing actions to strengthen URI's position as a nationally competitive public research university and a key institution in Rhode Island's effort to grow an innovation economy. The plan for the commission initially appeared as a recommendation of STAC and was formalized by legislative statute in 2006.

Justice Robert G. Flanders, Jr. was named Chair of a commission charged with making recommendations to state leadership on actions to enhance research activity at the University of Rhode Island. The URI Commission for Innovation will propose actions to strengthen URI's position as a nationally competitive public research university and a key institution in Rhode Island's effort to grow an innovation economy.

URI Awarded Contract to Create First-of-Its-Kind Undersea Technology Center

The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) announced that it has awarded URI with the first Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology in the United States. The Center's mission will be to establish cooperative research, product development, technology transfer, and science and technology training and educational alliances between NUWC and other center partners. "This innovative partnership will enable us to tap the expertise at both NUWC and URI to develop cutting-edge marine and defense technologies," said Governor Carcieri.
