The budget passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Carcieri is good for the state’s economy. Our 2008 Economic Growth Plan made clear that the state has to get control over its spending without raising broad-based taxes. The fiscal 2009 budget does exactly that. Do not underestimate how important this is to improving our business climate and stimulating job creation.

Kelly Space & Technology Opens East Coast Operation in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) today announced that Kelly Space & Technology, Inc., a San Bernardino-based California company focusing on aerospace, energy and homeland security technologies, is establishing an East Coast operation in Rhode Island. As production commences over the next year, Kelly estimates its Rhode Island facility will house approximately 50 employees.

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) today announced the agency’s participation in the Defense Technology Initiative (DTI), a new six-state network that will work to grow the region’s premier defense technology cluster. DTI’s mission is to create jobs, strengthen the regional workforce and increase the New England-area defense community’s political presence with the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill.

Dubbed "speed dating" for small businesses, the Department of Defense's Spring 2007 Matchmaking Event, held on Monday, June 11, brought together 63 government agencies and contractors with 577 New England small businesses looking to secure a piece of the billions of dollars the federal government allocates for contracts and subcontracts each year.

URI Awarded Contract to Create First-of-Its-Kind Undersea Technology Center

The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) announced that it has awarded URI with the first Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology in the United States. The Center's mission will be to establish cooperative research, product development, technology transfer, and science and technology training and educational alliances between NUWC and other center partners. "This innovative partnership will enable us to tap the expertise at both NUWC and URI to develop cutting-edge marine and defense technologies," said Governor Carcieri.
