R.I. Enjoys Eighth Consecutive Month of Job Growth

Rhode Island's job trend remained positive during the month of September, with the total number of jobs in the state swelling to 499,800 - representing a gain of 300 jobs since August. This gain represents the eighth straight month of job growth in the state.

Fidelity Constructing Largest Office Building in Rhode Island

Fidelity Investments, one of the world's largest providers of financial services, is in the midst of building its next office building in its 500-acre Smithfield campus. When completed, the 577,000-square-foot, four-level structure will be the largest office building in the state and will house at least 1,000 employees by the third quarter of 2008.

Quonset Gateway Gains State Approval

The Quonset Gateway proposal was unanimously approved this morning by the Statewide Planning Commission. The approval clears the way for the mixed-use development at the 72.5 acre entryway to the Quonset Business Park. The endorsement marks a major step forward in the state's effort to create an entryway to the park that integrates office and R&D space, pedestrian walkways and outdoor space, with amenities including a hotel and restaurants. The revised plan will enhance the park's ability to serve as an engine for job creation and economic growth.

Commission Brings National and International Expertise to Strengthen Research at URI

Justice Robert G. Flanders, Jr., Chair of the University of Rhode Island Commission for Innovation and Research, announced the full roster of national and international leaders who will serve with him on the commission. The commission is charged with proposing actions to strengthen URI's position as a nationally competitive public research university and a key institution in Rhode Island's effort to grow an innovation economy. The plan for the commission initially appeared as a recommendation of STAC and was formalized by legislative statute in 2006.

STAC Funding Program Set to Invest Additional $1.5 Million in Collaborative Research

Building on the success of its inaugural year, the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council's Research Alliance program announced that it will invest an additional $1.5 million in research that promotes collaboration across the state's academic and commercial institutions. Continuation of the Research Alliance and Collaborative Research Award program, launched in 2006, was made possible through support from Governor Donald L. Carcieri and the Rhode Island General Assembly.

Slater Fund Poised for Progress in Fiscal 2008

The Slater Technology Fund, a state-backed venture capital fund, is optimistic about prospects for 2008 after significant success in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007. Highlights of the previous fiscal year included a record amount of capital recovery, a near-record level of funding commitments, and renewal of annual funding from the State of Rhode Island to support the Fund's investment activities in fiscal 2008.

Inc. Magazine listed 12 R.I. firms in the Inc. 5,000, a list of the nation's fastest growing private companies. North Kingstown-based TCMPI, a wholesale direct link to jewelry manufacturers, name brand giftware and music instruments, made the Inc. 500 list at number 73.
