American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy Ranks RI. 9th

The New York Times has reported that Rhode Island is now ranked the 9th most energy efficient state for 2009, according to a survey conducted by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.  This is up from its rank of 11 in 2008.

The Scorecard used in the survey examines six energy efficiency policy areas: (1) utility-sector and public benefits programs and policies; (2) transportation policies; (3) building energy codes; (4) combined heat and power; (5) state government initiatives; and (6) appliance efficiency standards. Rhode Island scored 27.5 out of a total 50 points in these categories, an increase of two points from last year. Overall, states have shown improvement since last year, with an average score of 17 points, up from an average 15 points last year.

The Scorecard serves as a means to benchmark state efforts with the goals of encouraging states to continue to raise the bar in efficiency commitments and providing a roadmap for states that want to catch up to the leaders.
