Governor Lincoln Chafee Announces $250,000 Grant for 195 Redevelopment Commission to Expedite Next Phase of Work

Governor Lincoln Chafee announced today that he is making a $250,000 grant available to the 195 Redevelopment Commission through the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. The grant will provide the Commission with the necessary operating funds to begin the next stages of its work, including engineering planning and environmental impact analysis.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee Announces New Central Falls Economic Expansion Initiatives and Increased Tax Exemptions

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee announced today that, after stabilizing Central Falls' finances, the Office of the Receiver is now pursuing ways to expand the city's tax base while also offering tax relief for the state's poorest citizens. In order to grow its economy, Central Falls is unveiling an Economic Expansion Incentive Program designed to encourage significant capital investments and improvements to the city's building stock and spur the creation of new jobs within city limits. At the same time, state-appointed Receiver Robert G. Flanders, Jr. also proposes approximately 25% increases to a series of property tax exemptions aimed at homeowners, senior citizens, and veterans.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee today announced the thirty-eight members of the America’s Cup World Series Host Committee. The Committee, established when Governor Chafee signed Executive Order 11-11 last month, will coordinate Rhode Island’s efforts to ensure a successful event. Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport, will serve as Chairman.

Governor Chafee and RIEDC Board Authorize Establishment of a Private-Public Partnership with Providence Chamber of Commerce

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors today authorized the agency’s Executive Director Keith Stokes to move forward with plans to create a formal private-public partnership with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce to grow the state’s knowledge economy. The joint effort will be focused on attracting out-of-state businesses to relocate near the high concentration of medical and research institutions, technical and creative talent, and high-tech companies already in downtown Providence.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee Signs Executive Order Creating America’s Cup World Series Host Committee

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee today signed Executive Order 11-11, establishing the America’s Cup World Series Host Committee. The Committee will serve as the state’s principal entity for the coordinated effort to successfully host the America’s Cup World Series, which will take place June 23 – July 1, 2012 in Newport. Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport, will serve as Chairman. The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) has estimated that the event could create hundreds of new jobs and pump more than $70 million into the state’s economy.
