Organized by CMP Asia and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with the state of New York

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) partnered with the state of New York to recruit jewelry companies from both states to participate in the Hong Kong Jewelry and Watch Fair 2008. As a result of this successful collaboration, 14 jewelry manufacturers who are new to the Hong Kong market were able to participate in the September show.

The show organizer, CMP Asia, generously offered each of the delegates their choice of special incentives: five nights free hotel stay in Hong Kong or $500 USD. Attendees were required to be first time participants to jewelry fairs of CMP Asia and had to be jewelry or jewelry-related companies (i.e. jewelry machinery, designers, jewelry packaging, findings, stone setters, etc.).

The incentive greatly encouraged companies who may not have otherwise attended if they had to pay all expenses on their own to participate and, as a result, they gained important new global exposure.

“I was able to meet with existing customers from Brazil, Japan and the UK all in the same day for the cost of a Hong Kong $2.20 ferry ride,” said John Mathieu, president of Coventry-based JewelryThings. “You can’t do that in Coventry. Each of the four meetings led to either sampling or placement of new products. I developed two new export customers from Asia and Europe that placed orders with me for products made in the United States. It’s a short trip into several key manufacturing cities in the Pearl River Delta: Shenzhen, Donguan and Guangzhou. Hong Kong is easy to get around in and the scheduled transportation between the hotel areas and show venues is clean, well-organized and punctual.”

With 25 years of success, the September Hong Kong Jewelry and Watch Fair is acclaimed as one of the world’s top three fine jewelry fairs and the biggest jewelry fair in Asia, showcasing a wide range of products from fine finished jewelry, polished diamonds and gemstones, to all varieties of pearls, jewelry timepieces, packaging, displays, as well as jewelry-making equipment, tools and machinery. Additionally, the fair has become the world’s most global fairs in terms of visitors' nationality profile. More than 37,000 buyers from 133 countries and regions visited the September fair this year.
