Brings Ability to Build Collaborative Relationships, Strong Leadership

Steven J. King, P.E. has been named Managing Director of the Quonset Development Corporation. In making the appointment, Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) Executive Director and Quonset Development Corporation (QDC) Board Chairman Saul Kaplan noted that over the past year, King has performed well as the corporation’s Chief Operating Officer and has proven that he is capable of building collaborative relationships with Quonset’s many stakeholders.

“Steven has demonstrated his ability to lead the QDC effort and to help Rhode Island realize the full job creation potential of this important state asset,” said Kaplan. “Steven brings strong, thoughtful management to QDC, as well as the ability to strengthen key relationships with State and local officials, community members and the park’s business community. These skills are important as we continue to build out the park and create the capacity for new job growth.”

King, a Professional Engineer, has worked at Quonset since 1998. He served as the Director of Construction Services from 2003- 2005 and for the past three years as QDC’s Chief Operating Officer.

“I am very excited to work with the QDC Board, the Economic Development Corporation, and state and local interests to continue building on the positive growth at Quonset,” said King. “The transformation of Quonset/Davisville into a premier Business Park is attracting millions of dollars in private investment, business growth and job creation.  We have 168 companies at the Park employing 8,500 workers - a number that will grow as we continue creating platforms for new and expanding businesses.”

“Building on the momentum at Quonset will strengthen its foundation for continued growth. Moving forward we need to create stronger relationships with key stakeholders so that working together we take full advantage of this important state asset,” King added.

At its board meeting on Monday, July 21, 2008, the QDC Board of Directors unanimously concurred with Kaplan’s appointment of King.

“Successful managers today must be three dimensional,” said John G. Simpson, QDC Board Member, “They must be good businessmen, have great skills to work with the local community, and understand the role of the corporation in the greater statewide economic picture. Steve excels on all three counts.”

King, a resident of North Kingstown, served in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm with the US Army as a combat engineer officer in the 588th Engineer Battalion.  He was awarded the Bronze Star.
