Aspen Aerogels, a manufacturer of energy-efficient, aerogel-based insulation solutions, opened a $30-million, 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in East Providence Monday. The company’s expansion brings dozens of jobs to Rhode Island, with plans to add 60 more over the next three years.
The company, formed in 2001, manufactures a host of aerogel-based thermal, fire and acoustic insulation products that are up to eight times as effective as traditional insulations. The investment in East Providence will allow Aspen Aerogels to expand production of their high-tech insulating material.
“We are pleased that Aspen Aerogels will continue to invest in Rhode Island and we look forward to making their next phase of growth a great success,” says Saul Kaplan, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. “Aspen Aerogels is a strong company that provides many Rhode Islanders with good, high-paying jobs. We are excited to see the company continue its impressive growth and add jobs in Rhode Island.”
High energy prices and a demand for energy efficiency are boosting demand for the company’s aerogel-based insulation products, prompting Aspen Aerogels to build the new East Providence manufacturing plant. The facility, which began operating earlier this year, was built on a five-acre parcel on Dexter Road in East Providence and currently employs 40 people.

“Aspen Aerogels' expansion is a great thing for Rhode Island's economy. In addition to creating more high wage jobs for Rhode Islanders, the expansion further strengthens our state's position as a leader in high technology manufacturing,” says Governor Donald L. Carcieri. “We look forward to supporting Aspen Aerogels' continued growth in Rhode Island in the months and years to come.”
