On September 28, RIEDC executive director Saul Kaplan traveled to D.C. to participate in this year's Council on Competitiveness' Expert Committee meeting. The Council on Competitiveness' meeting highlights innovation leaders who have envisioned new strategies to guide the nation on how to be more competitive in both national and global markets.

The Council on Competitiveness, a non-partisan governmental organization, is the only group of corporate CEOs, university presidents and labor leaders committed to ensuring the future prosperity of all Americans through enhanced competitiveness in the global economy. They believe the best way to drive prosperity in a global economy is to have the most competitive workforce and business environment.

This year's panel experts will be asked key questions such as: does place matter less in a global economy, why don't regional stakeholders - such as companies and universities, see their own success tied to the success of the region, are there new competitive differentiators for regions, why is it so few regions have organized them successfully, and is there a new paradigm for state involvement in regional development?

The Council's one day event is highly regarded and other regional experts will include:

Mike Cassidy of the Georgia Research Alliance, Mary Jo Waits of the Pew Center on the States, Benjamin Erulkar of the U.S. Department of Commerce and John Thomasian of the National Governor's Association, amongst many other leading competitiveness and innovation experts. The keynote speaker will be Assistant Secretary, Sandy Baruah of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
